Californians do not need a permit to possess a loaded weapon:
- In their own residence. This includes temporary residences, such as hotel rooms and campsites.
- At a place of business in which they have a “possessory” interest. For example, the co-owner of a convenience store does not need a permit to keep a weapon at his place of business.
- On private property. Legal prohibitions against carrying loaded weapons apply on public property only. Employers that don’t want workers carrying guns on their private property must have a policy banning weapons at work.
