LEXINGTON, Ky. (13abc Action News) - Update: Police have made an arrest in the case of the murder of a Perrysburg man who was a student at the University of Kentucky. The victim graduated in 2012 from Maumee Valley Country Day and died today after being shot in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Fayette County Coroner identified the shooting victim as Jonathan Krueger, 22. Krueger was shot early Friday morning.

Lexington police chief Mark Barnard announced the arrest of 18-year-old Justin Smith at Noon today. During the news conference, Barnard said the suspect is not a student at the University of Kentucky. He added an arrest within seven hours of the crime was "important" and the prosecutor in the case declined to say whether they would seek the death penalty.

Police say they responded to a report of shots being fired around 2 a.m. and found Krueger lying on East Maxwell street.

Investigators were searching for a man wearing a red hoodie. They say the man was last seen leaving the area in a maroon mini van, possibly, a Chrysler Town and Country model.

Officers think Krueger was gunned down during a robbery. A friend, who was with the victim, escaped and found two people who called police. He told them that around 2 a.m. a mini van pulled up, two men jumped out and confronted them. The witness says the men grabbed his watch and when he tried to throw his wallet at them and run, he heard gunshots. (扔钱包这种事是不靠谱的)The friend wasn't injured.

Two men who called police say they thought the gunfire was fireworks until Krueger's friend ran up to them.

"The look on his face was just like, incredible. He was in so much shock. He was asking us if like, he could trust us, cause he was just scared of anything at that point in time. That was his friend who got shot at so it's, terrifying," Thomas O'Mara, who helped the victims, said.

Police say they recovered a weapon in the Cardinal Valley neighborhood on Cambridge Drive but were unsure if it's connected to the shooting.

Lexington police say around 5:30 a.m. they tried to stop a maroon mini van for suspicion of DUI. Officers say the driver took off toward a home on Le Havre Road. The man wouldn't exit the home and police called in a SWAT team.

Officers tell WKYT two children were in the home at the time of the standoff.

Around 6:30 a.m. Justin Smith exited the home peacefully and was arrested. Police have not said if the arrest is connected to the shooting. Smith is facing charges for fleeing and evading.

The University of Kentucky issued an urgent alert for students to avoid the Transylvania Park area around 3 a.m. The university said, "the emergency condition has passed, all conditions are normal and you may safely resume your regularly scheduled activity," at 3:40 a.m.

News of Krueger's death rocked the campus. UK President Eli Capilouto, noting that it was a tragedy for the campus community, issued a statement about his death.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to Jonathan's family, friends, faculty members, and fellow students," he said. "We have reached out to his family to let them know that we are here to assist them in any way we can at this incomprehensible moment."

The Lexington Herald Leader says that an adviser to the Kentucky Kernel newspaper, Chris Poore, called Krueger "a great guy who had become a wonderful photographer." Krueger was raised in Perrysburg where his father ran a large greenhouse. Maumee Valley Country Day School confirms that Krueger was a 2012 graduate. The administration there planned a meeting to discuss the situation.

On Sunday, Krueger posted a message on social media thanking his friends for wishing him a Happy Birthday and adding "there's so much to be happy about."

A vigil is planned for Krueger at the University of Kentucky this evening. Krueger's fraternity, Beta Theta Pi is organizing the vigil.

The full statement from UK President Eli Capilouto

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 17, 2015) — University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto notified the campus community this morning of the death of a student. Below is the message sent to students, faculty and staff of the university:

Campus Community,

I am deeply saddened to let you know that a member of our University of Kentucky family was tragically killed in a shooting incident early this morning.

Jonathan Krueger, a 22-year-old junior in the College of Communication and Information, was killed while walking home in the area of Maxwell Street and Transylvania Park. Lexington Police have apprehended two persons of interest in the shooting, and the investigation is on-going.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Jonathan's family, friends, faculty members, and fellow students. We have reached out to his family to let them know that we are here to assist them in any way we can at this incomprehensible moment.

For those understandably shaken by this tragedy, do not try to bear the burden of grief alone. Reach out to your family and friends and members of our UK family for comfort and support. Do not hesitate to contact the University of Kentucky Counseling Center at 859-257-8701 and ask for the day-time on-call staff member.

Although this tragedy occurred off campus, it is a stark reminder that all members of our campus community should at all times be vigilant about their safety, and the safety of others. We are each other’s keeper.

It is also in a moment like this that we are reminded of how fragile and precious life is. Let us all keep Jonathan’s family, loved ones and friends in our thoughts and prayers.

Eli Capilouto
President
